Journalism World Wars

War photography is something I chose to pursue because I wanted to uncover the truth. I grew up in an alcoholic family which greatly influenced my life. It gave me character and endurance to be independent. After years of working during the covert war in Guatemala, I went to Iraq as a contract photojournalist. I need to begin by saying that many people misunderstand what a photojournalist actually does. I’m often the one discovering the story, proposing the research, seeking out the human side, and listening with empathy. There are always two sides, and as a trained cultural anthropologist, I feel I have an informed advantage. I try to remain as objective as possible when hearing people’s stories. No one is ever completely free of bias—we all grow up shaped by our own ideas—but we can try to step into the lives of others to better understand them. Even the side that appears evil still has a story to tell. As a photojournalist, I am just as curious to hear that side. My job is to explain, to spark curiosity in my viewers, and to encourage them to seek the truth for themselves. Still, I’ve learned that no matter what I show, people will always find their own reflections in each image. Perhaps this is what ultimately defines our humanity.
